Unsung heroes get their due

The 10 people receiving awards at the American Legion banquet in Ilwaco last week all had a couple of things in common: service to their agency and their community.

But there were other themes running through the nominations at the 30th annual Derald D. Robertson Safety Awards ceremony. Many of the law enforcement, firefighting, rescue and U.S. Coast Guard award recipients have demonstrated that a key part of their job is mentoring others to learn and grow.

Pacific County Fire Department No. 1 mechanic Tom Hersey (who maintains the fire trucks) and U.S. Coast Guard housing specialist Jami Gardner, perform functions that are important, but rarely recognized. Linda Stark of the South Pacific County Technical Rescue Team was honored for her beach safety education and swim training work; there is no way to count the number of lives she may have saved.

We join Don R. Grable Post No. 48 commander Terry Bryan and awards coordinator Dick Wallace in saluting these unsung heroes among us.
