Cooler and slightly unsettled through next week

Relative to the notably persistent warmth of recent weeks, this weekend will seem rather cool. In reality, however, temperatures should remain near normal for this time of the year. Nonetheless, this switch to northerly air flow will serve as a sobering reminder that the frost-free growing season is certainly not yet upon us.

A weak system dropping in from the north on Sunday may cause scattered showers in western areas, but with drier air already in place, the impacts should not be too large. Next week looks to be variable and slightly unsettled, but generally benign weather is expected. Temperatures should be rather cool early in the week, and then may become milder later in the period.

While it is difficult to find long intervals of entirely dry and calm conditions, there are no major precipitation or wind events on the horizon. It presently appears that Tuesday is likely to be dry, with another system due to cause western rain and eastern wind on Wednesday. Overall, despite the relatively cooler temperatures, there is still no indication of severe or abnormal cold in the next seven days. The current suite of forecast models shows the potential for more significant cold beginning later next weekend (Feb. 17-18), but given our recent weather and the model inconsistency, such a development remains suspect at this time.
