ILWACO — Two men were stabbed while trying to subdue a would-be arsonist on Monday night.

The incident occurred shortly before 7 p.m. at an apartment complex in the 100 block of Second Avenue SW in Ilwaco, according to Long Beach Police Chief Flint Wright. Investigators are still trying to piece together exactly what happened, Wright said, but they believe the altercation started when two men saw a third man attempting to set fire to a car. Each of the men tried to intervene, apparently unaware the suspect was allegedly armed with a knife.

During the course of the ensuing struggle, the suspect allegedly stabbed both of the men. A fourth man then saw what was happening, and reportedly used his handgun to fire shots into the air in an effort to stop the fight.

Wright said both victims were taken by ambulance to Columbia Memorial Hospital in Astoria. He did not know the nature of their injuries or their medical status.

Wright was not able to immediately provide a full name for the suspect, whose surname he gave as Marteeny. It was unclear whether the suspect was injured, but Wright said officers planned to book him into Pacific County Jail.

Wright described the suspect as a local, possibly mentally unstable man who is known to police.

Pacific County sheriff’s deputies and Washington State Patrol troopers assisted at the scene.

This is a breaking news story. It will be updated as details emerge. Wright expected to have more information on Tuesday morning.
