Plan ahead for Sunday bridge closure

Published on October 10, 2018 1:18PM

PACIFIC COUNTY — The Astoria-Megler Bridge will be completely closed during the Great Columbia Crossing Walk/Run on Sunday, Oct. 14.

The bridge will be closed at 8:30 a.m. Participants begin the event at Dismal Nitch Rest Area and follow State Route 401 for 1 mile. This section of SR 401 will be closed to traffic briefly while participants are on that portion of the course, from about 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

Participants still on the Astoria‐Megler Bridge at 10:50 a.m. will be picked up by shuttle bus to clear the bridge so that it can reopen to vehicles at 11 a.m.. The event route loops through the Port of Astoria district and participants who are across the bridge may continue in that section after 11 a.m.

Oregon Department of Transportation will not allow vehicles to line up to wait to cross the bridge on either the Oregon or Washington side. Travelers will be dispersed and directed away from the bridge during the event.

Motorists who need to cross the river that day are urged to consider changing their schedule to cross the bridge before or after the closure. The closest available detour requires using the Puget Island ferry, with a minimum travel time of around two hours between the Long Beach Peninsula and Astoria.
