Here’s a big thank you to all involved in the Willapa National Wildlife Refuge’s fourth grade Environmental Education Program! We concluded our 2017 season with three days of field trips to the South Bay Trail this May. Because of the 26 dedicated volunteers, 233 fourth graders from Pacific County Public Schools received an additional science curriculum related to our local wildlife. They learned that they are part owners of this refuge and can help with work the refuge performs to responsibly maintain and manage this glorious acreage of land, water and animals. From the staff at the Refuge Jackie Ferrier, Terri Butler and Deanna Wilson, to Kathy Freitas and the Friends of Willapa NWR, to all our teacher/volunteers, the fourth grade teachers in Long Beach, Ocean Park, Naselle, South Bend, Raymond and Willapa Valley schools, the citizen scientists (aka students), Evergreen Septic and the Rotary Club, I am eternally grateful for your expertise, dedication, enthusiasm and assistance. I will return regularly to Tarlatt, Riekkoa, Teal Slough and Ledbetter to hike, observe, meditate and enjoy these public lands. Join us!
