ILWACO — Nowadays, nearly every superhero movie gets a sequel, so why not stage plays?

After saving a young girl in last spring’s IHS Drama Club (IDC) production of the comedic play, “The Hero Squad vs. The Princess Snatchers,” the team returns to take on an up-and-coming villain in, “The Hero Squad vs. The Supervillain’s Apprentice,” IDC’s winter production, being performed Dec. 9 and 10.

“I enjoyed the characters a lot last year, and thought it would be fun to see what else the Hero Squad has to offer audiences,” said IDC director Rachel Lake.

The team of four super heroes with super questionable powers are back. Taking over the role of Iron Lung, is Erin Hines; while Jordan Reed will be taking on the role of Lindy (her power is giving encouragement to the rest of the group). Devin Cavness returns to reprise the role of 3-D (who has the ability to see height, width and depth with the use of special glasses) and Kat Johnson returns as Slap Shot.

“I don’t precast any of my plays and it was wonderful to have all the students audition,” said Lake. “All roles were cast with the best auditions in mind, (and the) actors did an awesome job in tryouts and are working very hard for the final product.”

With only two males in the cast of 11, female actors are taking on a number of male character roles, something that is not unusual for an IDC production.

“We are staying true to the playwright’s wishes with the genders of the characters,” said Lake. “(We have) cast males in female roles and females in male roles for years, this play is no different. We like to give all students a chance to act. All the actors are asked at the auditions if they are okay with performing as any part, most say yes.”

We catch up with the team as they lament the amount of work they’ve had lately.

“Not a single super villain or evil henchman in the city for over a month,” said Cavness as 3-D.

“That’s great, but it also makes it kinda boring to be a super hero,” said Hines, as Iron Lung.

The crew doesn’t have to wait too long to get back into action, as they dispatch a group of evil pirates at a grocery store — using puns as much as punches.

“I hate to ‘foil’ your plans,” said Hines as she begins to throw everything in the hero’s shopping cart at the pirates. “But I really ‘relish’ this chance to ’squash’ your evil.”

Their arch nemesis Nikolai Oshgoshbgoshnikov also returns, played this year by Julia Corsi. But this time the mad scientist is bringing along his teenage niece Veronica, played by Ashtin Bell, who is training to be like her uncle and has her own nefarious plan to take down the group of heroes. What Oshgoshbgoshnikov doesn’t know is that his young protégé may already be better at it than her uncle.

“I’m excited to see the Hero Squad again. It is like watching a sequel to a kids cartoon show,” said Lake. (It’s) a great continuation from last year’s play, but with some new added bonuses.”

The show will be performed in the IHS choir room, which will once again be made up like a black box theater.
