COLUMBIA — The Wahkiakum County Marine Resources Committee is supporting a volunteer project to observe, identify, and document seals and sea lions on the Lower Columbia River within the boundaries of Wahkiakum County.
Weekly counts will be obtained at two to four sites between Jan. 12 and April 29, 2018. The information collected will give a clearer picture of pinniped occurrence in this area to complement existing data collected up and down river of Wahkiakum County.
Volunteer participants will be assigned a specific location to observe pinnipeds. Recording forms and training needed to identify and document seals and sea lions will be provided. Mileage will be reimbursed as funding allows.
This study is a continuation of research supported by the WCMRC in coordination with Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. A training session led by WDFW will be held at the River Street Building Meeting room, 25 River Street, Suite D in Cathlamet, on Jan. 6 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. To pre-register for the training, contact MRC Assistant Coordinator Donna Westlind at 360-795-3278 or e-mail at email@example.com.
