DEEP RIVER — The Finnish Pioneer Church in Deep River was packed on Sunday for the annual Christmas Concert. The billing of “A Christmas Concert to Delight All” couldn’t have been more accurate. MC’d by Mike Swanson, it was an hour of entertainment that ended way too quickly.

The Children’s Choir touched everyone’s heart strings as they sang Christmas songs in Finnish. Choir director Becky Underhill always seems to have a wonderful rapport with choir members and, together, their performances are always top rate.

Oysterville’s Sue Holway provided a thoughtful and interesting presentation on the history on the church and the people involved in its construction.

Vocalist Richard Ellis displayed his amazing talent singing “What Child is This” and “The Wonder of Wonders” a cappello.

Naselle’s Wilho Saari, a master of the Finnish kantele performed a medley of Christmas Carols. A prolific composer, Saari has written over 4,000 musical pieces for the Kantele.

The Finnish Adult Choir, under the direction of Cliff Weimer, sang the perennially favorite Finnish Christmas song “Hosianna.”

The Bell Choir, under the direction of Jan Wolfe, wound up the concert by ringing several pieces of Christmas music.

With the concert completed and the lighting of the Nativity Scene on the end of Bob and Thelma Miller’s barn, Christmas season has official begun
