Richard Gale Evans

TENNESSEE — Richard G. Evans, 79, died Oct. 22, 2017, in Humboldt, Tennessee after an extended battle with cancer. He was born Jan. 24, 1938, in Vancouver, Washington.

After attending high school on Oahu, Hawaii he enlisted in the United States Coast Guard. Initially a seaman, he was stationed at Cape Disappointment and Destruction Island from 1957 through 1961, working aboard various vessels including the Northwind. He was later commissioned as an officer and received fixed wing flight training in Pensacola, Florida.

For most of his career, he piloted C130 Hercules aircraft on search and rescue missions while stationed at Barbers Point, Hawaii, Elizabeth City, North Carolina and Kodiak, Alaska. He retired a Lieutenant Commander in 1977.

After “retiring” he continued working in various occupations; flight instructor, machinist, aid for adults with developmental disabilities and corrections officer.

He enjoyed reading, gardening, camping, home remodeling and fishing on his boat Akemi.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon; his sons, Richard Evans and wife Ruth Ann Evans of Ocean Park, Randy Evans of Seaview and Thomas Evans of Olympia; a sister, Joyce; his brothers, Fred, Rod and Robert. plus numerous grandchildren.
