CALIFORNIA — It is with great sadness our family announces the passing of Bernard “Bernie” E. Patch, Sr. He passed into the hands of our Lord on Aug. 26, 2017, at UC Davis Hospital. We will miss him more than words can express, but have many treasured memories to forever hold in our hearts.
Bernie was born June 21, 1925, in Sanford, Maine, to Abbie (Smith) and Everett Patch. When he was three years old his parents moved the family to Rochester, New Hampshire. He lived there until he joined the Merchant Marines on his 17th birthday, during World War II, where he served on Liberty ships. After the war he moved to Indiana, met his wife to be, and married her on April 27, 1947. He moved his young family to California in 1961.
He spent his life in construction. Many homes, bridges and projects bear his mark of craftsmanship. He was also an excellent auto mechanic and taught his children and any others who were interested in learning his many knowledgeable skills.
After a visit to Long Beach, Washington in 1988, he and his wife moved there to retire. He loved the Long Beach Peninsula and enjoyed long walks on the beach, clamming, helping can fresh caught tuna and salmon and visiting with his wonderful neighbors and many friends. He also loved family gatherings, yard sales, thrift stores, vintage cars and especially watching his great-grandchildren play.
His parents; daughter, Rebecca Marks; an infant daughter, Tiahanna; 16 brothers and a sister, Dorothy Halmuth, preceded him in death.
Bernard is survived by his wife, Olney (Wright) Patch, the love of his life for more than 70 years! They truly are a love story — still would hold hands and slow dance in the kitchen when they would hear a favorite old song. He is also survived by his children; Cindi Williams of Butte Valley, Calif.; Ed Patch (Kathleen) of Paradise, Calif.; Susan Pidanick (Lou) of Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.; Pam Patch of Colusa, Calif.; a sister, Marian Veno of Rochester, NH; sisters-in-law, Barbara Wright of Arroyo Grande, Calif. and Enid Patch of Elma, Wash.; seven grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and many wonderful nieces, nephews and godchildren throughout the states. What a legacy Bernie! We all love you so much!
A Celebration of Life was held by his loving family and officiated by his wonderful niece, Terri Wright of Arroyo Grande, Calif.
Funeral/Crematory arrangements were entrusted to The Neptune Society.
