LONGVIEW — The life of Joyce Brookins, 75, a 19-year resident of the Peninsula, will be celebrated on Saturday, Dec. 2, at 2 p.m., at Sunset Sands Club House at 20419 Birch Lane, Ocean Park. She died Nov. 16, 2017, in Longview.
Joyce was born on Aug 18, 1942 and was a native of Waldron, Arkansas. She is a twin daughter of William and Eula (Hooper) Calvert. Three years after her birth Joyce moved with her family to Longview, Washington. Four years later the family moved to Live Oak, California where Joyce received her education and graduated from high school.
On July 16, 1960, Joyce married Jerry Wilcox whom she had met one year earlier while Jerry was serving in the United States Air Force. Joyce became a wife and mother of two Daughters, Kayleen (Wilcox) Durand and Charissa (Wilcox) St Clair. After Jerry’s time in the service the couple settled in Colusa, California. A graduate of the cosmetology program at Yuba College, Joyce worked outside the home as a beautician. For a number of years she and her twin sister, Lois Woolwine operated Twin Curls Salon in Colusa. Many locals remember the laughter, care and great times these twin sisters shared with their clients and friends during this time. Joyce met her second husband, Patrick Brookins in 1972 and they were married on August 31, 1974. Joyce renewed her love for the Long Beach Peninsula after the couple spent their honeymoon there. Joyce was with Pat until his death.
Over the years Joyce would visit her twin sister, who lived on the Peninsula and decided to settle permanently in Ocean Park 19 years ago. It was here she could enjoy the serenity and natural beauty of this coastal community. Joyce loved spending time with her friends and family, they were her joy. She was a deeply caring mother and grandmother. Those who knew her will never forget her keen sense of humor and infectious laugh, she will be greatly missed.
