ILWACO — The Comets beat the Fishermen 25-27, 25-15, 25-22, 25-18, in the season opener Tuesday, Sept. 5. Darian Jacot ran Naselle’s offense in place of the injured setter Taylor Gudmundsen. She got in a good rhythm with Holly Disch, who finished with seven kills. Madeline Jacobson starred for Ilwaco, closing out the Fishermen’s first set victory.
Both teams showed their strength in the middle. Ilwaco led the opening set 8-3 after a big spike from Makenzie Kaech. Holly Disch slammed a ball past Kaech to cut it to 9-8. Kaech won a point with a series of big hits for an 11-10 lead. Disch ran a give-and-go with Jacot and slammed the ball through Jacobson’s hands to get within 19-20.
Jacobson tied the game at 25 with a big hit, then served two straight aces for the 27-25 win. Jacobson’s strong play carried over into the second set. She turned back a big hit by Hailey Weston, getting a back row kill. Her spike over Disch made it 4-1 Ilwaco.
Shortly afterward, Disch served four straight aces, including one that hit the back line. She served six straight points for Naselle for a 9-5 lead. Jacot fed Disch for a big hit that went just out, cutting the lead to 15-12. But Jacot kept going to Disch, who followed with a pair of furious hits for kills. Disch served to close out the set, getting three more aces; she finished with 11 aces.
Jacot, who was Naselle’s junior varsity setter last year, showed her savvy with a setter dump that discombobulated Ilwaco for a point early in the third set. Four straight Lily Harman aces extended Naselle’s lead to 18-10. With Ilwaco behind 24-16, Katie Glasson brought Ilwaco back, serving six straight points. Kaech had a pair of overpowering kills during the stretch. Naselle then closed out the set, 25-22.
In the fourth set, the Comets went on an 8-1 run for an 18-11 lead. They took the set 25-18 to finish off the win.
