Naselle — The Comets won a tough volleyball match against Firm Foundation Christian 28-26, 25-23, 25-15 on Tuesday, Oct. 3. The Eagles (4-2) had only previously lost to 1B power Three Rivers Christian in a five-set match. Lily Harman had 25 digs and seven aces, and Holly Disch contributed 15 kills, helping Naselle improve to 6-3, and 3-0 in league play.
Firm Foundation led the first set 22-20, but a pair of aces by Taylor Gudmundson helped Naselle build a 24-22 lead. After a hit by Disch went long, Firm Foundation was serving game point at 25-24. A big hit by Kenzie Glenn sent the Eagles reeling, and the return went right to Disch, who smashed it to finish the point and tie it at 25. At 26-26, Hailey Weston had a hard hit that may have been headed out. It was close enough that the Eagles had to go after it, but they couldn’t return it, giving Naselle game point. An Eagle hit into the net ended the opening set.
The Eagles built a 13-9 second set lead, but Naselle chipped away. Weston had a hard hit to the corner for a kill, Gudmundson served two aces, then Disch placed a hit into a gap to tie the game at 16. Gudmundson turned around a tough point with a diving stop, Jacot tapped the ball over, and Disch spiked the return for a 21-17 lead. Firm Foundation answered with five straight points. Jackie Steenerson won a battle at the net, which tied it at 23 and gave Harman the serve. Harman delivered a fastball that the returner sent sideways for an ace, then hit another tough serve that the Eagles had to chase back, for another ace to close out the set.
In the third set, Firm Foundation again took a 9-7 lead. Naselle scored seven straight points, Steenerson capping the streak by knocking the ball out of an Eagle player’s hands at the net. The Comets continued stretching the lead and closed out the match.
Naselle volleyball star Holly Disch was named WIAA Athlete of the Week for the week of Sept. 17-23, when she had a monster 20-kill, six-dig game in a five-set loss to Wahkiakum, along with a nine-kill, four block performance in a three set victory over Knappa and strong play at the Saturday tournament in Raymond.
