RAYMOND — Ilwaco got off to a strong start but went down to defeat against Raymond 25-19, 25-17, 25-22 on Thursday.
The Fishermen had Raymond out of sorts early and took a quick 7-2 lead. The Fishermen maintained a 15-11 advantage midway through the set, but the Seagulls answered with eight of the next nine points. Karlee Freeman had several impressive kills to help Raymond to the opening-set win.
The Seagulls led 14-6 in the second set. The Fishermen answered with five straight points, including three kills in a row by Madeline Jacobson. Shortly afterward, Jacobson slammed back a Raymond setter dump to cut the lead to 16-12. But Raymond got rolling again, patiently setting up hits to win long rallies. Tina Sypaphay had back-to-back spikes to an opening in the middle of the floor, stretching the lead to 22-13.
Sophia Marsh opened the third set with a kill right on the edge of the back line for Ilwaco. Raymond had three straight aces to go ahead 7-4 and extended the lead to 16-10. Ilwaco went on a 7-1 run, capped by a Jacobson spike. Jacobson then smashed a hit to the back line that made it 18-18, and tapped one through the defense to tie it once again at 19. With Raymond leading 24-21, Makenzie Kaech kept the Fishermen alive with a kill. Raymond set itself up nicely on the final play, forcing Ilwaco to the edges with hits, then finishing the match off with a kill to the middle.
Willapa Valley won at Ilwaco 25-22, 20-25, 25-21, 18-25, 15-11 on Tuesday, Oct. 10.
