ELMA — Ilwaco picked up a post-Christmas road win, beating the Elma Eagles 61-37 Wednesday, Dec. 27. Elma fell to 1-11 on the year, their only win coming against Raymond, while the Fishermen improved to 5-6 with their first win in two tries against 1A competition.
Alex Kaino scored Ilwaco’s first 10 points, including two three-pointers. He followed with an assist to Tenyson Ramsey along the baseline after the defense collapsed onto him, then saved a ball in-bounds with an outlet pass to Tynkila for another score, helping Ilwaco to a 14-11 lead after one.
Calvin Baze came off the bench and attacked the basket with similar zeal, getting four points and two assists to fuel a 16-6 Ilwaco run over the last 5:20 of the half. Reese Tynkila scored eight second-quarter points, and Ilwaco led 30-20 at halftime.
Baze, in his fourth game back off a broken leg, continued showing the court vision that coach Tim Harrell raved about before the season. In the third quarter Wednesday, for example, he turned down a pass to Daniel Whiting open in the corner, directly in his own line of vision. Instead, he saw Reese Tynkila in the key out of the corner of his eye, guarded but in good position for a higher-percentage shot. He led him toward the basket with a pass, and Tynkila made the shot. That gave Ilwaco a 47-30 lead after three. Tynkila matched his eight second-quarter points with eight more in the third period.
A steal and layup by Baze capped a 15-0 run that extended Ilwaco’s lead to 58-30 midway through the fourth quarter, before the Eagles cut the final margin to 24.
Cody Vollan, the only Elma player averaging double-figures scoring this year, scored 18 Wednesday. Tynkila led Ilwaco with 18 points. Kaino added 17 points and eight rebounds.
Ilwaco will play Northwest Christian in Lacey Wednesday, then visit South Bend Saturday at 7 p.m.
