SEASIDE — Ilwaco’s boys wrestling team took sixth place at Seaside’s Pacific Rim Tournament Friday and Saturday, Jan. 5-6.

At Seaside, a 16-team tournament, Marcello Lazaro and Ghannon Whelden led the Fishermen with second place finishes. Whelden was in a 0-0 tie heading into the third round of his finals match before going down to defeat.

Royce Murry took third place. “He was in some exciting matches, going to overtime or winning at the last second. He had a couple of those, and he ended up on the right side of them,” coach Kevin McNulty said.

Keegan Kemmer continued a standout freshman year with a third-place finish of his own. Allen Chetwood and Marcus Connor were both fifth. Cahlahbe Whelden and Jackson Wilkin each took sixth place.

IHS girls compete in Kelso

KELSO — Ilwaco’s Kasey Bageant, Cheyenne Bent and Serena Kuhn entered a huge field at Kelso’s girls’ wrestling tournament, finishing a combined 3-6. The tournament hosted 575 competitors from throughout the Northwest, a valuable experience for teams like Ilwaco that face small girls’ fields in local competition.

Bageant lost 10-7 to Grandview’s Adri Graf in her first round, then came back with a pin of Othello’s Iyazely Barraza and a 46-second pin of Centralia’s Autumn Waltman. Columbia White Salmon’s Hailey Johnson eliminated Bageant, pinning her after a 4:58 battle. Bent, like Bageant, wrestled in the 115 pound class, where she was 0-2.

Kuhn was the only Ilwaco wrestler with a first-round win, pinning Milynn Scott of Glacier Peak. She then lost to Fife’s Kayla Elika in octofinals, then went down against Madison Emerson of White River.
