Winlock came back from a 47-37 deficit to tie Ilwaco at 57, but Calvin Baze and Reese Tynkila made plays down the stretch to bring Ilwaco a 69-66 win over Winlock Monday, which kept the Fishermen alive in Districts. Baze, operating from the high post late in the game, was responsible for the next nine straight Ilwaco points, either scoring himself or assisting Tynkila under the basket. This included an up and under move against three defenders for a 63-61 Ilwaco lead with 3:05 to play, and a pass to Tynkila maneuvering along the baseline, which Tynkila turned into a three-point play for a five-point edge heading into the last two and a half minutes.

The Cardinals cut the lead to 67-66 in the final minute, then created a turnover with 38.2 seconds left, their coach alertly calling a timeout as Tyler Whitehead obtained the slightest bit of control of a loose ball. But the Cardinals could not execute on their remaining possessions.

John Glenn and Daniel Whiting had shot Ilwaco to a sizable lead. Glenn’s triple from the corner on a baseline-out-of-bounds play to end the first half put the Fishermen ahead 32-28 at the break. Glenn and Whiting each hit two threes in the first five minutes of the third quarter, building Ilwaco’s lead to 47-37. The Cardinals came back to tie it, creating turnovers with some suffocating defense while feasting on offensive rebounds.

The Cardinals took a 9-2 lead, but Ilwaco went on a 15-3 run the rest of the first quarter. On the final possession of the quarter, Alex Kaino worked the clock down to seven seconds, then created something from nothing, charging toward the basket and getting fouled. Kaino hit two free throws for the five-point lead. Kaino and Tynkila carried Ilwaco’s offense through the first half. Tynkila dominated along the baseline and scored 10 of his 17 points in the first half. Kaino had nine of his ten points in the first half.

Baze scored all 12 of his points in the second half. Glenn finished with 16 points, including five three-pointers. Life Christian beat Raymond 54-41 and will take on Ilwaco Tuesday at 6:00 in Castle Rock.
