Knappa’s junior varsity team beat Naselle 10-4 Monday, April 9. The teams played with unlimited substitutions. Knappa played varsity players on defense while sending its JV players up to hit. The Comets used a mixture of regulars and bench players. On the mound, Knappa went with talented junior varsity pitchers Ryson Patterson and Jackson Goodman, while Naselle sent out Corey Gregory and Chase Haataia.
Comets coach Randy Lindstrom had in the past coached both Knappa pitchers on a regional all-star team. “They’re the real deal,” he said. “But they’re sophomores, and Knappa’s so loaded they aren’t varsity pitchers yet.”
The Comets quickly got to Patterson, who came out with a fastball-heavy arsenal. Joe Strange and Jimmy Strange started the game off with back-to-back singles. Ethan Lindstrom doubled them in and later scored on an error to make it 3-0. Jimmy Strange walked and scored on Cole Dorman’s sacrifice fly in the third for a 4-1 Comet lead.
Cameron Miethe’s two-RBI double sparked a decisive six-run fourth that gave Knappa a 10-4 lead.
Naselle visits Oakville for a league game Thursday at 4:00, then hosts Winlock Friday at 4:00.
