Larry Kemmer, who wrestled for long-time Ilwaco High School coach Kevin McNulty, will succeed McNulty as head wrestling coach. Kemmer, who served on McNulty’s coaching staff, was hired as head coach last week.

“He knows the kids. He’s very enthusiastic about the program. He had one son (Dylan) go through the program, and another son (Keegan) in it right now,” Ilwaco principal Dave Tobin said. Keegan took third at State as a freshman last season in the 113-pound weight class.

McNulty served as the Ilwaco athletic director, football and wrestling coach but is leaving to coach football team at Sunrise Mountain High School in Nevada. He had two stints as Ilwaco head wrestling coach, from 1992 to 1996 and 2007 through last year.

Tobin and new athletic director Kara Powell have moved rapidly to fill the large number of coaching vacancies this summer. They have hired new coaches for football (Sean Cease), volleyball (Michaela Eastham), girls soccer (Andrew Goodwin; see related article) and now wrestling. They still must find a boys soccer coach.

“Our number one priority is our kids,” Tobin said. “We want people who will be good to our kids, treat them well, and at the same time challenge them.”
