Daniel Whiting placed second among boys and Estella Sheldon was third place among girls at the Wednesday, Sept. 5 Elma Jamboree, a short two-mile race at Vance Creek Park to open Ilwaco’s cross-country season. Runners had a flat, grassy course along a pond.

“It was a very hot day,” said coach Sarah Taylor. “The grass was kind of brown…It was kind of an out-and-back course,” rather than a loop.

Whiting finished in 11:31, taking second out of 41 runners. Tristan Trudell took eighth at 12:52. Sheldon finished in 15:20, third place out of 16 runners. Alex Carper finished sixth at 15:48.

Sheldon and Carper led Ilwaco’s girls to a first-place team finish over Aberdeen. Ocosta had the two fastest runners in the girls’ race, Kjirstin Hopfer and Natalie Cain, but did not have enough runners to field a team. Hoquiam sent only two runners. Ilwaco’s boys team finished third in a four-team field.

Freshman Emma Brundeg had a solid debut with a twelfth-place 17:37.71, just .61 behind teammate Carli Kemmer. Nisa Mendoza took eighth at 16:12.

John Glenn was 13th with a 13:35 run. A bit behind him was a pack of Colton McNabb (13:59), Ghannon Whelden (14:02) and Anderson Stoddard (14:04). Brady Rasmussen, Brenden Chabot, Jose Mendez, and Logan Simonson all came in under 16 minutes. Michael Johnson got an even 17 minutes. Phillip Hung, a first-time runner and Taiwanese exchange student, finished in 19:54.
