Anthony Yoder tied for second place with fellow freshman Ross Kukula at LaCenter Thursday.
Fishermen sweep LaCenter 201-239 for second straight win

By KEVIN HEIMBIGNER
Observer staff writer

LACENTER - Ilwaco won their second consecutive golf match by soundly defeating Trico League foe LaCenter 201-239, an average of 7.6 strokes per player. Ryan Kukula was medalist with a par round of 37 and Ross Kukula was second with a 39. He tied fellow freshman Anthony Yoder, who also fired a 39 to spark the Fishermen's win.

Patrick Whealdon came in fourth with a 42 and Clark Wilson was fifth with a 44 as the top five Fishermen scorers all bettered LaCenter's leading round. The Wildcats' top performer, Cooper Bars, shot a 45 on their home course at Tri-Mountain and tied Ryan Tapio, Ilwaco's sixth place golfer who also carded a 45.

Coach Dan Whealdon said, "The Kukula boys led us and I was very happy with how smart Anthony Yoder played. To have our top six kids better or tie their best score was a plus, especially considering Bars went to state last year for LaCenter."

Whealdon related, "Ryan Kukula had no mistakes in his round. He had two bogeys, but came back with two birdies to shoot even par. Ross Kukula has played very well all summer and his 39 score was no surprise. Yoder used his 3-wood all day and didn't chance using his driver. He is a very smart golfer already as a freshman."

Whealdon said, "Patrick struggled with his putting and Clark (Wilson) hit the ball very well. Ryan Tapio also played a very smart round of golf and he's made great improvement in the 12 months he has played golf. He played five or six excellent holes."

The Fishermen will next compete at Mountain View in a large invitational tournament Sept. 14. "We will only be able to take five varsity players to Mountain View, but the competition within our team for those top spots is good and will only make us stronger," Coach Whealdon concluded.
