| | Teen saved after dramatic fall from WAIKIKI cliffs (video) ILWACO - On Sunday, a 17-year-old boy survived a roughly 200-foot fall down a cliff - a plunge that might have ended tragically.
On Sunday afternoon, a Jayhawk helicopter crew from U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Astoria rescued the boy who fell from a cliff at the Lewis and Clark Interpretive Center in Cape Disappointment State Park.
The local crew received the call at about 1:52 p.m., and were soon on scene to hoist the boy onboard and transport him to Columbia Memorial Hospital, said Petty Officer 3rd Class Kelly Parker.
After seeing the cliff that empties onto Waikiki beach, Parker was amazed that the boy wasn't more severely injured.
"It's pretty amazing the height he fell from," he said.
The boy was conscious and able to thank the crew for their help during the trip, and was listed in stable condition after his arrival for medical treatment, Parker said. He was later transferred to Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland. His name was not made public.
The cliffs between North Head and Cape Disappointment lighthouses are deceptively enticing, starting with a gentle slope that has lured many into treacherous situations over the years.

I too would like to second the comments of CAPT Ahlers and thanks Ilwaco Fire, Seaview Rescue, State parks and local law enforcement personnel for their excellent response! Sometimes the local guys get overlooked for the excellent service they provide the community! It is always an joint and effortless team concept here on the Pennisula! Thats why I love being a part of this community!

The Coast Guard did a wonderful job and deserve all of the attention this rescue has received. What has been overlooked, however, is this was an Ilwaco Fire Dept call, and IFD maintained Command through-out. Also helping was State Parks, local law enforcement, and the Technical Rescue Team, which provided a cliff rescue team and rescue swimmer which reached the patient first. After their evaluation, Ilwaco Fire Command requested a Med Evac from the Coast Guard. These volunteers spend hours training to save lives, and do so every day. The fact that an organization such as the Coast Guard treats them as fellow rescuers speaks for the quality of service we, as citizens, enjoy. Yes, the Coast Guard did a great job. Let's not forget the rest of the team. I know, I was the voice of Command for this rescue, Captain Ed Ahlers, Ilwaco Fire Department.
