Landslide closes SR 4 for unknown period of time

State Route 4 will remain closed in both directions for an unknown amount of time from milepost 19 near Shannon Road to milepost 26 near Mullen Road. A landslide in the vicinity of milepost 25 is too unstable to begin the cleanup process, Wahkiakum County Department of Emergency Management said Friday. Several days of rain, including seven inches of rain during one 24-hour period, resulted in significant flooding, several landslides and a power outage caused by downed trees in Wahkiakum County. The slide is on the east side of KM Mountain, downhill from a massive slide that closed the highway for many months in the early 1990s. Geotechnical engineers from Washington State Department of Transportation are assessing the hillside to determine the best way to proceed. The Ferry Oscar B. is operating around the clock. Leaving the WA side on the hour and the OR side on the quarter after.
