NASELLE - The Washington State Department of Transportation announced recently that the Dismal Nitch rest area on State Route 401, formerly known as Megler Safety Rest Area, one mile east of the US 101 Astoria-Megler Bridge, will be closed for the winter as of Tuesday, Jan. 17.

The state-owned rest area will remain closed through the winter season and will re-open on March 1. The rest area is closed every year at this time due to the negative effects heavy winter rainstorms have on the rest area's water system.
