LONG BEACH - The National Weather Service invites volunteers with an interest in severe weather spotting to attend an information meeting Tuesday, April 6, 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Super 8 Motel meeting room, 500 Ocean Beach Blvd., in Long Beach.

The Skywarn program trains volunteers on weather events similar to those listed in the Severe Weather Spotter's Guide (www.wrh.noaa.gov/Portland/criteria.html), and you may have the opportunity to call in several times a month depending on the weather pattern in your neck-of-the-woods.

Volunteers who agree may occasionally be contacted for a "ground truth" as to what is actually happening near your house. Most likely our phone call will be to confirm an element of potentially severe thunderstorms, like large hail or damaging wind. Other calls may be to verify heavy snowfall or peak wind speed associated with large winter storms.
