The latest clam opener provided fairly easy limits for those who took to the beach. Several digs could be made with sunlight still prevailing. Clams are of decent size and still growing. For those who prefer smaller, tender clams, now is the time to get them. Our next dig is a five-dayer starting on Dec. 19 and going through Dec. 23.
By the way, there were also some people red-tail perch fishing last week; that is always an option.
This week also provides some excellent weather for duck hunters, with rain predicted for most of the week and good breezy weather from 15 to 22 mph. There are lots of ducks on Baker Bay, Willapa Bay and surrounding ponds.
Holiday gifts for men and women who frequent the outdoors are probably the easiest to buy for, since they can never have enough stuff:
• 2015 hunting and fishing licenses are something that they can always use and are easily purchased from the WDFW website
• Check out local stores or on-line outlets like Cabela’s or Fisherman’s World to pick up that item that they would never buy for themselves. Cold-weather gear, gloves, hats, electric socks, parkas, rain gear and waders are all relatively inexpensive and always welcome gift.
• Fishermen are always looking for lures, rods, reels, nets, sinkers, leaders, etc. If you are having trouble choosing the correct item, sales clerks can always steer you in the right direction.
• A subscription to the National Rifle Association, Outdoor Life, or many of the other popular outdoor magazines is a gift that keeping arriving throughout the year.
Just remember that what you give along these lines will show your personal interest in the hobby and be much more welcomed than a tie, a pair of skivvies, or new t-shirts.
For those who are looking to make a real holiday impression, consider giving a guided fishing or hunting trip, shotgun, rifle or revolver. Firearms can be purchased here on the Peninsula at Sandy’s gun shop, Dennis Company in Long Beach or Bull Dog Firearms in Ocean Park.
Better yet, have your loved ones make out a Christmas list — you will be sure to please.
