Active schedule of events on calendar for next four months

PENINSULA - A new group is forming on the Peninsula sponsored by the Peninsula Baptist Church, but it's open to all singles ages 21 to 101.

The purpose of the group is to give singles activities to do in a group. Often times everything seems to be "couples oriented." That leaves out a large share of our population with very few productive activities to participate in.

The group has held two game nights at Alan and Valerie Harrison's home in Surfside and had lunch at Chico's. A four-month schedule is now available including bowling, a Thanksgiving potluck, several Christmas events, and a Valentine's dinner. The holidays seem to be a particularly difficult time for many singles, especially if they have no family in the area.

Pacific Aging Council Endeavors is a non-profit agency that serves meals to clients 60 and over for $2.50 a meal. About 80 receive in-home delivery and if meals are needed on the week-end, the center will prepare frozen dinners. About 25-50 eat lunch at the center Monday through Friday.

Commenting on the singles group effort, Mardell Bullis, site manager, said, "God bless these people for coming. This is a great idea." Cynthia Pride, organizer of the event and a delivery driver for PACE, said she was very pleased with the turn-out. The singles group worked about four hours and applied a badly-needed new coat of paint to the walls and ceiling of the basement facility.

If you are interested in being a part of this group, call the church at 665-5060, Valerie Harrison at 665-0804, or Grant Boursaw at 665-0772, and someone will make sure you get a calendar of events. Grant will also be leading a Bible study to begin soon. If you are a single parent, babysitting can be arranged.

There are around 20 in the group so far, and they are looking for more. The next activity is a Thanksgiving potluck on Nov. 29 at the home of David Welke in Surfside at 4 p.m. It's a great environment for singles to go out in a group, meet other people, and have fun and fellowship.

Alan and Valerie Harrison, advisors to the group, are from Bakersfield, Calif.; and Alan manages the Chautauqua Lodge in Long Beach. A Christian singles ministry is their calling and they have led two cycles of the Divorce Care Workshop that is held on Thursday evenings at 6:30 p.m. at the Peninsula Baptist Church. Peninsula Christian Singles is an outgrowth of that workshop and has had much success so far.

So if you are a single aged 21 or older and want to get involved in healthy activities on the Peninsula, this is the place for you. Call to get a complete schedule or to ask questions about the group.

Future activities include bowling, Sunday lunch at Chen's and McDonald's, Thanksgiving potluck, New Years' Eve Party, and more game nights.
