PORT OF ILWACO - "Terror at the Port" is the theme of the first-ever Halloween art event at the Port of Ilwaco.
Scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 20 from 5 to 9 p.m., the "terror" will feature "scary art, creepy crafts, hideously delicious food and terrifyingly terrific drinks," according to port merchants.
Scarecrows will be posted throughout the area with a contest for the public to name the creepiest.
A free raffle will be held with gifts from Nautical Brass and Time Enough Books. Special menu items will be available at the Canoe Room and Pauly's Bistro.
New exhibits will be on display at Cymbolics Gallery. Shoalwater Cove Gallery will hold a drawing for co-owner Marie Powell's 2003 Kite Festival poster and the gallery wil feature glass pumpkins by glass artist John Cook.
At the Wade Gallery, in partnership with Time Enough Books, author and former Disney illustrator Jimmy Pickering's art and award-winning children's books will be available.
The artist's work will be available for sale and he will sign copies of his books including "Somethin' Pumpkin" and "It's Fall" and "It's Winter," the first two books in a series of four Pickering has written and illustrated. The writer/artist is currently working on his eighth children's book for Al Jardin of the Beach Boys.
Pickering, who now lives in Astoria, studied film and character animation at the California Institute of the Arts then worked for Hallmark, Walt Disney Co. and Universal Studios. He was chosen illustrator of the year at the West Hollywood Book Fair this fall. His work may be viewed at his Web site at www.jimmypickering.com.
If that isn't enough to get people going for Halloween, bobbing for apples may be an option at the Canoe Room and Harbor Lights will be serving "devil chili." Nina's Vintage Clothing will have plenty of ideas for last-minute costumes.
