OLYMPIA — A dynamic representation of body art and modification, monsters and the undead will make for a lively weekend in Olympia as the first One Nation Under Ink Tattoo and Piercing Convention gets under way Nov. 2 through 4.

Organized by Kevin Fink, tattoo artist and owner of Reddog Tattoo in Long Beach, the three-day event will have over 40 tattoo artist booths, live tattooing, costume and pinup contests, a tattooing seminar, live music, food and libations.

Fink says his experience with tattoo conventions goes back to the 1990s, having attended such events in New York, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., the Tri-Cities, Vancouver and others. He says the One Nation Under Ink convention took a year to plan, but it will be a great opportunity for tattoo artists from around the region to network, bounce ideas off of each other, and learn new techniques.

On Friday, there will be contests to find the best horror/zombie tattoo, best body suit, most piercings, best decorated booth. There will also be a zombie/monster costume contest, live music from Toledo band Sucker Punched, and a pinup contest to crown the first ever Miss One Nation.

On Saturday, the convention will host contests for the most unusual piercing, small color tattoo, large color tattoo, small black/grey tattoo, large black/grey tattoo, worst old tattoo, best old school tattoo and tattoo of the day. Live music will be performed by A Lein Nation from Seattle.

The final day’s contests include Day of the Dead tattoos, color sleeves, most realistic/portrait, best native/tribal, best back piece, best of show and tattoo of the day.

Contest entry fees are $5 each; winners will receive trophies designed by Fink and Don Nisbett. A $1,000 cash prize will be awarded for the best overall tattoo.

Local event sponsors include Don Nisbett Art Gallery, The Bead Shop, Castaways, Belks Plumbing, 10th Street Garage, Long Beach Go Carts, Consign Me, Corral Drive In, Scrappuccino, The Lost Roo, Circle Of Life, Full Circle Cafe, Captain Bob’s Chowder, Great Escape Coffee, Sirs And Hers, Bensons By The Beach, Tidy By The Sea, The Barbershop, Loose Caboose, West Coast Spirits, Holeman Enterprises, Artistic Bouquets, Body Essence Massage, Hooligan Inc., NW Harley Davidson, WebEZiner, Mithra Tattoo Supply and T&C Home Furnishings.
