ILWACO - The Peninsula's sixth annual Surf Perch Derby made the big time when a story about their fishing derby was featured in the March 23, 2006 edition of Fishing and Hunting News. The event is sponsored jointly by the Kiwanis Club, City of Long Beach, Ocean Park Lions, and Long Beach Lions.

The story says in part, "You can catch a limit of two-pound red-tail surf perch and bring home a limit of razor clams as well."

The derby, which will be May 20, costs $20 per person or $25 the day of the tournament. The fee entitles the participant to an "all you can eat" pancake breakfast at the Bolstad beach approach at the north end of the boardwalk in Long Beach.

Prizes include $25 for the biggest surf perch and total catch winners will get $100, second place $50, and third place $25. Entrants can sign up in three-person teams or be assigned to a team at random. The team prize is $300 for first, $150 for second, and $90 for third place.

Winners will be announced at 5:30 p.m. May 20 and the weigh-in will take place between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. There will be a raffle and door prizes will also be awarded. All fishers are reminded to have a valid Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife license.
