Winners of the 2003 Washington State International Kite Festival in Long Beach

KEVIN HEIMBIGNER photo
Tim Poxton of Maple Valley found conditions perfect Wednesday to go kiteboarding. With north winds at 20 mph and plenty of wet sand during low tide, Poxton rode and flew from Klipsan Approach to Long Beach in about half an hour.

LONG BEACH - The 2003 Washington State International Kite Festival set a world's record for most Cody kites (named after "Buffalo Bill") in the air at one time, according to volunteer Claudette Blaylock. The Cody kites, which look like boxes with wings, were used in World War I for spying and to increase the ability for radio transmissions. One hundred thirty-one Cody kites were aloft Saturday, eclipsing the previous Guinness Book of World Records entry of 106.

Ray Bethel was the people's Choice for best kite flier, breaking four world records during the festival.

Gerard Clement of France was recognized as having the best kite at the festival.

Members of the executive committee for the festival include Jane Holeman, Marla Johnson, Phyllis Knight, Frances O'Neil, Mary Yoshimi, Earlene Nichols, Wayne Curran, Pat Cruse and Evonne Miller, head of beach events. Miller compiled the following list of winners for this year's festival:
