ILWACO — The Ilwaco girls (0-1) varsity soccer team dropped a season-opening non-conference match to Columbia (2-0) 6-0 Saturday, Sept. 11 in Ilwaco.

The Fishermen entered the match with a young squad, including only two seniors among 14 players  versus a deep Columbia squad featuring nine juniors and seniors.

Ilwaco relied on several underclassmen in skill positions, including the starting goal keeper, 8th grader Juliet Perez. Perez played valiantly in the net, turning away several Columbia scoring chances before the Bruins scored the first goal to take a 1-0 lead at the 35-minute mark of the first half.

Columbia continued to use constant forward pressure, leading to several opportunities late in the first half as a thin Ilwaco defense tired.

Ilwaco junior midfielder Ione Sheldon and sophomore forward Abbiegail Williams threatened but were turned away by tenacious Columbia defense, culminating 6-0 Bruin victory. Ilwaco (0-1) will next host Toledo on Wednesday, Sept. 15 at home.
