LONG BEACH - The Alpha Theta/St. Jude's Golf Classic will be played this Saturday at the Peninsula Golf Course in Long Beach. The local version of the St. Jude's golf tournament started by Danny Thomas, which is sponsored locally by the Alpha Theta chapter of ESA, with tee off with a shotgun start on the Long Beach course at 10 a.m. this Saturday, Sept 16. The local tournament has been held since 1993.

All proceeds raised by the tournament will go to the St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital to help those who are battling cancer, sickle cell anemia and other crippling diseases. Children may be referred to the hospital by their doctors. The hospital, located in Memphis, Tenn., is affiliated with a symposium of other hospitals including the Childrens' Hospital of Seattle. No child will be turned away from St. Jude's because of financial issues. Transportation is available for accepted patients and the parents may stay with the child when they are admitted.

The tournament costs $50 for 18 holes of golf, a St. Jude's T-shirt, and a lunch at the clubhouse. Prizes will be awarded for the low scoring golfers, for contests on various holes and a raffle will be held. The chair person of the event is Mindy Penttila. Registration may be completed through Pat Vernon at 360-484-3844 or at the course before 10 a.m. this Saturday.
