KELSO - Alva "Smitty" Smith, Jr., 74, died Feb. 1, 2004, in Kelso. He was born Nov. 26, 1929, in Keller, Ind.

He served in the Air Force during the Japanese Occupation and Korean War.

He worked as a supervisor for Weyerhaeuser Pulp for 29 years, retiring in 1992. He and his wife, Jeanne, lived in Long Beach for five years and owned Grumpy's Feed and Grain until December 1999 when they moved back to Kelso.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanne in Kelso; sons Robert A. Smith and Dennis M. Smith of Kelso; daughters Esther L. Strong of Patricksburg, Ind., Patricia J. Davenport of Kelso and Ellen R. Wagner of Kelso; sisters Ruth Ripple of Okeechobee, Fla., and Doris Barnhart of Center Point, Ind.; 24 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brothers Russell Smith and Everett Lloyd Smith.

A funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Feb. 5 at the Castle Rock Christian Church. Arrangements by Steele Chapel at Longview Memorial Park and Crematory.
