WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Rep. Brian Baird was unanimously selected by his fellow Western Democrats to serve on the Congressional Democratic Steering Committee, a powerful leadership group. He will represent the interests of members from Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, and Washington.

Steering committee members will give input into committee assignments for the upcoming 109th Congress.

"I am committed to working with each and every member to ensure that every part of our region receives the committee assignments needed to reflect our strength and vitality," Baird said. "Serving on the Steering Committee is an honor, and I look forward to ensuring our voice is heard by national leadership."

Membership on the Steering Committee will allow Baird to have direct input on the allocation of committee assignments; he will be able to make certain that the Northwest is represented on committees most integral to the region's interests.

Previous regional representatives on the steering committee include Reps. Tom Udall, D-N.M., and Darlene Hooley, D-Ore.
