CHINOOK - The Clatsop County Sheriff's Marine Patrol removed a body discovered Friday afternoon on Little Sand Island, just north of the shipping channel on the Columbia River and a little south of Chinook.

The body was of a man, but because it was in an advanced state of decomposition, age or further details are unknown at this time.

A group of men beachcombing Friday afternoon found the corpse caught among the driftwood, Clatsop County Sheriff Tom Bergin said.

The body has been sent to Portland for an autopsy, Bergin added.

The islands just offshore from Chinook and Ilwaco are part of Oregon, following a controversial U.S. Supreme Court decision 90 years ago.
