Bridge head-on sends four to hospital

An Astoria woman was cited for careless driving after a head-on wreck Sunday on the Astoria-Megler Bridge.

ASTORIA-MEGLER BRIDGE — At 10:14 a.m. Sunday, Oregon State Police received a report of a two-vehicle accident on the Astoria-Megler Bridge.

Tanya Ann Christensen, 29, of Astoria, was driving northbound when she reached down to pick up her hands-free ear piece for her phone, in case someone called, according to the OSP incident report. As she reached down to pick up the device, she swerved into the southbound lane and hit an oncoming car driven by Jennifer Christene Helvey, 30, of Chinook.

Christensen, Helvey and her two children, ages 5 and 2, were transported to a hospital. Helvey had minor cuts, but the children were uninjured. Christensen was cited for careless driving.

The drivers were not using their cell phones at the time of the crash.
