WAHKIAKUM - The Wahkiakum Community Network (WCN) is considering incorporating the Naselle/Grays River School District within its legal service boundary. Discussion is being sought from all residents at one of the following two meetings: March 3 at 7 p.m. at the Naselle/Grays River Valley School Building in Naselle; and April 7 at 7 p.m. at the River Street Building in Cathlamet.
WCN is designated to help families and youth of Wahkiakum County. If we focus only on those students within the Wahkiakum School District then those that go to Naselle/Grays River Valley School District are not being served. Yet, WCN does not have authority to indiscriminately help all those within the Naselle/Grays River Valley School District. Because some programs serve Pacific County residents, the programs are placing themselves in a situation of being scrutinized and financially punished for reach out to youth and families.
The WCN is dedicated to pursuing the fulfillment of three goals: preventing or reducing teen substance abuse, preventing child abuse and neglect, and preventing domestic violence. More could be done if the threat of jeopardizing direct service programs for serving a population outside of Wahkiakum County was removed.
A decision whether to petition for the incorporation of the Naselle/Grays River Valley School District within the Wahkiakum Community Network will be made by April 7.
