Chinook home destroyed by fire

CHINOOK — A home on Riverview Lane in Chinook was destroyed by fire Sunday night.

The fire was discovered at about midnight by a neighbor who called 911. Pacific County Fire District 2 Chief Brad Wilson, who lives near the home, said it was “fully engulfed when I walked out my door”  to respond to the fire.

About nine firefighters from Chinook and five or six from Ilwaco responded to the scene and, according to Wilson, the crews had the fire under control in about 45 minutes. But it took more than four hours to completely dampen the blaze.

The owners weren’t home when the fire started. “It had been burning for a while,” Wilson said. “It’s lucky the owners weren’t there.” He said the home, valued at $84,000, was a total loss. The cause of the fire is not known. Witnesses reported hearing an explosion at some point during the night.
