OCEAN PARK — One afternoon in October 2018 was a beautiful, yet sad occasion for Beach Baron Car Club members.
With the weather gods cooperating, hot rods and cruisers emerged from the safety of their garages for a cruise to the old clubhouse to say their final farewells to Phyllis Knight, a longtime club member and pillar within the Ocean Park community.
With their cars glistening in the sunshine, the field gates were opened to accommodate overflow parking for the more then 125 people who came to pay their respects to their beloved friend and mentor.
Family and friends gathered together in a show of fellowship, storytelling, laughter and sadness, with some from as far away as Yakima.
A potluck luncheon was hosted by the Beach Barons Car Club, the Knight family, Ocean Park Chamber of Commerce and numerous merchants on the Long Beach Peninsula. All who attended were greeted with a selection of goodies, and club members got together and cooked a number of dishes that Phyllis had published in her cookbook.
During the ceremony, the Knight family was presented with an embroidered plaque that will be placed on the wall inside the clubhouse. Lastly, the Knight family tradition of supporting the Peninsula events with mini-donuts will live on through the efforts of Roger and Phyllis’ son, Jeff Knight and his family.
