LONG BEACH - Long Beach City Councilman Fred Cook tendered his immediate resignation from the council this week, citing health concerns and stress.

"To my many supporters and constituents who have put their faith and trust in me by electing me to the Long Beach City Council, due to family considerations, stress and the toll it may take on my health, I apologize that I will not be serving out the term to which you elected me," Cook wrote to the Observer.

He continued, "I've been honored to serve as your councilman and have very much enjoyed the relationships that have developed because of my six years in city government. To those of you who have offered accolades, I'm sure they're more than I deserve, and to those that I have disappointed, I wish I had served you better. To each of you I offer my thanks for allowing me to be an integral part of the city I love."

Remaining members of the council will appoint a replacement.
