Director visits area libraries

SOUTH BEND - Jodi Reng, left, the new director of the five-county Timberland Regional Library District, has been making the rounds of the 27 libraries in the system, meeting 375 staff members since she began her new job Nov. 3. Friday, she was at the South Bend Timberland branch, sharing cookies with, among others, Rita Mueller, middle, a South Bend library employee, and Vicki Young, right, a South Bend Friends of the Library member.

Reng comes to Washington from Minnesota where she worked in the Plum Creek Regional Library System - 26 libraries in nine counties. Regional libraries are big in Minnesota, she said, with 330 in the state.

"It's a method that works," she said. "It saves tax dollars when many libraries work together. When a customer places a hold on a book, he or she can access millions of books." She said Timberland is "ready to start long-range planning with a strong outreach program and volunteers who are available and willing."
