LONGVIEW - Elaine Esselstyn, 82, of Long Beach, passed away Aug. 15, 2003 at a Longview adult care facility. She was born Dec. 7, 1920 in Riverside to Carl and Geraldine (Stewart) Elliott.

Ms. Esselstyn attended school in Brewster and then continued her education at Washington State College. Later she moved to Pendleton, Ore., working as a legal secretary. In 1968 she worked for the firm of Green and Griswold in Portland while living in Cascade Locks. During that time she ran for the office of mayor and was the first woman elected to that position. She served two terms, from 1972 to 1976. She retired in 1980 and moved to Long Beach.

Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law April and Rick Kelley of Westport; grandchildren Scott Kelley of Anchorage, Alaska and Brad Kelley of Albany, Ore.; and one great-granddaughter Taylor Kelley. She was preceded in death by her brother, Don Elliott.

There will be no funeral service. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Columbia Funeral Service.
