LONG BEACH - Christmas in July was the theme of a benefit turkey dinner at Elks Club No. 1937 Friday evening. Santa and Mrs. Claus entered the hall riding on a horse-drawn carriage led by the Grinch. A raffle of a doll and several other items was also held Friday night.
According to event chairperson, Barb Evans, proceeds from Christmas in July will go towards Christmas baskets and toys for needy families and children next December.
"I love to do things like this for the kids," Evans said.
Music was provided by Lorraine Ripley, Justus was the pooper scooper, but fortunately his services weren't needed as the pony made his exit in a timely fashion. The Grinch looked much like Kristina Haug, and Santa and Mrs. Claus spoke in the same kindly manner as Marlin and Sandy Slatum.
A crowd of nearly 75 people enjoyed the festivities, but sadly there were not many children.
"Hopefully next year we will have more kids," Evans said. On a positive note, the efforts in July of the local Elks will surely bring many smiles to faces come this Christmas.
The event was just one of several fun and philanthropic happenings the Elks are putting on during their 50th anniversary year, having opened their doors in 1954.
