OCEAN PARK - Fire District No. 1 Fire Chief Thomas O'Donohue announced the receipt of a USDA/Rural Development Grant in the amount of $61,800 toward the cost of a new $120,000 ambulance.

The grant procedure included a long process to justify the community's need of a new ambulance. The grant has been awarded to MedTech Ambulance of Vancouver, Wash.

The addition of this ambulance will increase the current fleet of Advanced Life Support units serving our community to seven.

Lt. Rodney Harrington, who is in charge of vehicle acquisitions, stated that "current out-of-town hospital transfers account for over 120,000 miles each year which shortens the life expectancy of the ambulances."

Fire District No. 1 plans on upgrading additional ambulances with a combination of grants and vehicle "re-mounts" that can save as much as 55 percent of the cost by re-using current parts from existing units. The new ambulance is expected to be delivered in August.
