ILWACO - Thursday morning at approximately 9:30 a.m. a fishermen reported to dispatch by cell phone that a person had apparently fallen from the rocks below North Head Lighthouse and that his body was floating in the ocean nearby. A Group Astoria helicopter picked up the body and at 10:14 a.m. their personnel pronounced the person dead. Next of kin have not been notified.
The person was apparently camping alone at Cape Disappointment State Park and had gone to the rocks below North Head Lighthouse to fish. A grid search by a second helicopter from Group Astoria and a 47-foot motor lifeboat from Cape Disappointment Coast Guard Station did not find anyone else in the water and the search was called off after 11 a.m.
The area is closed to anyone coming down from North Head Lighthouse, but is accessible from Benson Beach at low tide and by climbing the often slippery rocks and is a popular place for fishermen during the summer months. The incident is under further investigation. Local Surf and Cliff Rescue Units were called to the scene, but did not materially aid in the recovery effort.
