LONG BEACH - James J. Higgins, a Seattle resident who loved Long Beach, died early Sunday morning, Feb. 20, 2005, at his family's home, Killarney Cottage, in Long Beach.

Born March 31, 1926, in Portland, Ore., he started visiting Long Beach in 1930 when he was 4-years-old and continued throughout his childhood. After his marriage in 1949 he began bringing his kids and eventually grandkids almost every year thereafter. Most recently, he enjoyed almost monthly visits walking the beach and reading books with his wife of 55 years, Peggy. He also was very interested in the history of the area, particularly the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

Mr. Higgins was the beloved husband of Peggy (O'Neill) Higgins, father of John (David Moh), Dan, Margaret (Alan, Kaitlin and Claire Holcombe), Maureen (Dennis, Shannon and Sean Sargent), Eileen (Dan McCormack), Kathleen (Patrick, Molly and Darby Jenny).

He died at the place he loved, next to the woman he loved.

A memorial Mass in celebration of his life was held at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Burien on Friday, Feb. 25. Remembrances may be sent to the University of Portland or to the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
