SPOKANE - James R. Mort, 71, a resident of Port Orchard, died June 9, 2004, in Spokane while returning from a trip.
The son of Ralph and Olive (Wood) Mort, he was born July 2, 1932, in Lima, Ohio. Four years later he moved with his family to San Francisco, Calif., where his father found steady work during the Depression. Mr. Mort grew up in the Bay area and graduated from San Mateo High School in 1950.
Soon after graduating from high school he married Jackie Whelan and the couple settled in Springfield, Ore., where he worked at a local paper mill. Four years later he returned to California, settling in Rocklin where he worked construction and as a drywall finisher. While in Rocklin he rode and raced motorcycles with his friend Don Miller.
In 1971 he married Marian Baker. A year later he moved to the Olympic Peninsula area where he worked in cedar mills, fished commercially and drove a truck. For several years he was a long-haul truck driver which sparked his interest in traveling and seeing all the sites of the United States. In 1980 he began driving a log truck in the Rosburg-Grays River area, eventually moving his family to the area. Following retirement, he moved to Port Orchard.
Mr. Mort was a member of the Eagles lodge, a volunteer fire fighter for over 20 years in Rocklin, Calif., and Grays River, a reserve deputy for Wahkiakum Sheriff Dept. for over 20 years and a reserve deputy for the police department in Rocklin. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, sports (especially the Seattle Mariners), and reading. He was a "tinkerer" who could fix almost anything. Retirement allowed him the chance to travel with his friend Jan. Together they enjoyed seeing their children and grandchildren, visiting, attending sporting events and fairs with them. During the past few years they enjoyed following the Forks Spartans basketball team and the 12U AAU girls team.
Mr. Mort is survived by children and their spouses Linda and Gene Strong of Rosburg, Cindy and Kraig Konnerth of Applegate, Calif., Sharon and Dave Zellar of Forks, Connie and Dennis Nagasawa of Rosburg, Larry and Ditas Baker of Rosburg, Robin Benn of Modesto, Calif., Stacy and Art Brewer of Caddo, Okla., Scott and Patty Pease of Oakland, Calif., and Vykee Larson of San Diego, Calif.; sister Sue Manson; companion Jan Grosso of Port Orchard; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and "Taz" the cat. He was preceded in death by wife Jacqueline Mort in 1988 and wife Marian Mort in 1997.
