Jene E. Caples

PORTLAND - Jene E. Caples, 75, died August 24, 2002 in Portland, Ore. He was born March 6,1927 in Long Beach, one of eight children of Alpha and Mayme (Anderson) Caples.

He grew up in Long Beach and attended the local schools. During World War II Jene served with the U.S. Coast Guard and also as a member of the U.S. Army. He was a long-haul truck driver and a member of the Teamsters Union. He retired as a truck driving supervisor for several large construction companies in Alaska.

On September 30, 1950 he married LaVonne Johnson. They became parents to four sons. The couple returned to the beach 20 years ago and made their retirement home in Ocean Park. Jene loved fishing, long-haul truck driving and spending time with his sons. He was a member of the Ocean Park Moose Lodge.

He was preceded in death by two sons David E. Caples and Sandy Mark Caples and one granddaughter. Jene is survived by his wife of over 50 years, LaVonne Caples at the family home, and sons Gary Caples of Valdez, Alaska, and Don Caples of Petersburg, Alaska; and five grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 31, at the Moose Lodge in Ocean Park. A potluck reception will follow the service at the lodge. Private family committal will be at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Ore. Arrangements by Penttila's Chapel by the Sea, Long Beach.
