Kenneth V. Tetz Jr.

KLIPSAN BEACH - Kenneth V. "Kenny" Tetz Jr., 59, died Jan. 6, 2003 at his Klipsan Beach home following a four-year battle with cancer.

The son of Kenneth Sr. and Jeane (Lougheed) Tetz, he was born in Ilwaco on July 20, 1943. He grew up in Chinook where he attended Chinook Grade School. He was one of two students in his first grade class.

Mr. Tetz took an early interest in sports and was involved in sports all through school. He played varsity football and basketball at Ilwaco High School and graduated with the class of 1961. A member of the Ilwaco Fishermen's championship Class B basketball team in 1960, he also played varsity football and track, and was co-captain in all three sports. He was all-conference in all three sports. In 1960 he was named to represent Ilwaco High School at Boys' State. He held various student body offices in high school including senior student body president.

Following high school Mr. Tetz attended Olympic College in Bremerton where he excelled as a student and in football as a fullback. He transferred to the University of Washington where an injury cut short his football career. He then attended Pacific Lutheran University where he excelled as a football player and was named honorable all-coast. He graduated from Pacific Lutheran University with a degree in business administration in 1966 and was a member of Alpha Kappa Psi fraternity.

Mr. Tetz worked in management for Union Oil for two years, for UniLever for 12 years, Reynolds Metals for four years and for Weyerhaeuser for four years.

In 1988 he and his wife Dee returned to the Peninsula where they purchased Tetz Oil Co. in Ilwaco from Kenneth Sr. The business had been started by his grandfather Bill Tetz in 1933 and operated by Ken Sr. and uncle Lawrence since 1965. Kenny had come full circle, beginning and ending his business career working with Union Oil. An era ended for the Peninsula in 2002 when illness necessitated the sale of Tetz Oil to Wilcox and Flegel of Longview.

Mr. Tetz was baptized and confirmed in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Chinook. Throughout his life he enjoyed participating in and watching sports, especially football and basketball. In years past he enjoyed deer, elk and duck hunting and fishing. In most recent years he and his family enjoyed spending time in the warmer climates of Arizona, California and Florida. He also enjoyed golfing, investing, astrology and visiting with friends. A loving husband, son, brother, cousin and friend to many, he lived life to the fullest, always maintained his sense of optimism and always thought of others before himself.

He and Nancy Brewer were married and later divorced. On Aug. 26, 1984 he married Dee Wood and she survives. Also surviving are father Kenneth Tetz. Sr. of Chinook; sons Gerald Troy Miller of Tacoma and Scott Clark Miller of Monongahela, Pa.; brother Douglas Tetz of Naselle; sister Dennise Fredrickson of Renton; and seven grandchildren. His mother, Jeane Tetz, died last month.
